NATIVE AND MAGIC ART
World cultures of music and art are the subject of this colorful program by Nova Deco. Classically trained violinists Nancy Johnson and Dominique Corbeil use their skills to bring the world closer. After a short description of cultural and musical styles, music is used to tell three stories of the origins of native art. The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush, written and illustrated by Tomie DePaola, tells the story of a young Native American painter who longs to paint the colors of the sunset. Setting the mood for the story, Nova Deco uses music from the Native American tradition, both with transcribed Native American tunes and with compositions based on Native American tonalities. The Spider Weaver by Margaret Musgrove, illustrated by Julia Cairns uses folk melodies from Ghana and Zimbabwe to tell the story of kente cloth. The master weaver who gives the secret of kente weaving to the two hunters is a large, yellow and black spider! Finally, the far east is brought near with Ma Lien and the Magic Paintbrush, a retelling of a Chinese folk story by Hisako Kimishima, illustrated by Kei Wakana and featuring music from The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto by Gang Chen and Ho Zhan Hao, which uses traditional Chinese folk melodies in a western concerto form. Music and art are magic!
