Mountain Dulcimer Math

Erin Mae will bring mountain dulcimers for the students to play and teach them the basics of making music on this simple folk instrument. Students will use the 3 strings and 14 frets of the dulcimer, as well as the beats and rhythms of music, to multiply and divide by 3, 4, 6, and 8. Through the actual playing of music, students will be adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing without even knowing they are doing math! This is the ultimate hands-on experience!

Artist

Erin Mae Lewis

Erin is making waves in the music world as a highly skilled and qualified mountain dulcimer player. At the age of 17 she was the 2004 National Mountain dulcimer Champion. She has been performing since the age of 10 and is a member of the national touring groups Scenic Roots and S.E.A.

As a teaching artist, Erin Mae presents timeless traditional American songs on an American folk instrument to help students grasp history, social studies, language arts, and music concepts. Students will be challenged to think creatively as they engage in conversation and movement centered around singing with the mountain dulcimer.
