American Identity

Discuss themes of personal, cultural, and national identity using artwork to generate conversation and inquiry. Artists give us a unique window on American life, reflecting the cultural, social, and political climate of the time in which they work. This tour will incorporate both the permanent collection as well as special exhibitions.

The museum offers free school tours for kindergarten through college, both guided and self-guided. Guided tours focus on WAM?s premier American art collection and special traveling exhibitions. Tours can be tailored to the needs of individual groups, generally last one hour depending on grade level, and are led by trained tour guides and museum educators.

Art is a powerful way to spark critical thinking and enhance the curriculum content at every grade level and across subject areas.

The development of critical thinking skills is now recognized as an essential component in the education of young students.

The Wichita Art Museum is an educational institution, and tours for students and teachers are a crucial part of educational outreach. WAM wants every student to have an enriching, dynamic museum visit.

Teachers are encouraged to see the museum as an extended classroom to help meet state standards as well as build critical thinking and visual literacy. WAM’s resources are here for you!

TO LEARN MORE about the tour add-on components, or discuss creative ways for students to engage in learning at WAM, please contact Courtney Spousta, curator of education, at 316-268-4907 or by emailing education@wichitaartmuseum.org. You can request a tour online at wichitaartmuseum.org/learn/tours.
