A Mouse and a Mole Learn the ViolinFrederico, the Mouse Violinist by Mayra Calvani and Mole Music by David McPhail explore the world of the violin and its literature. Frederico lives in the workshop of the great violin maker Antonio Stradivari. He explores a violin that is being made, showing the students all the different parts of the instrument. A discussion of how the instrument is played follows, with demonstrations of different bowing techniques using familiar tunes. Mole Music is the story of a mole that hears a violinist and wants to learn the instrument. The pictures in the book have excerpts of major musical works, and we see how he progresses with those excerpts. Mole plays underground, thinking he is the only one listening, but the illustrations show how the world around him is affected by his playing. The students are exposed to all the parts of the violin, and music by Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven, and other well-known composers.
